Dry Cleaning
Dry Cleaning - There are four solvent used in cleaning cocktail dress and they are: PERC, Stoddard solvent, hydrocarbons, and silicone.
Let's talk about each below:
1. Perchloroethylene - commonly known as Perc. This is the most used for all dry cleaning solvents and is the best solvent for degreasing of silk, rayon or acetate and dirt.
2. Stoddard solvent - This solvent is more difficult to find and is a petroleum based solvent. This solvent can not be used in the Gaza type mall stores dry cleaning, due to fire regulations. This solvent is safer for cleaning dresses with sequins and beads of PERC.
3. Oil - This is a new formulation of petroleum-based solvents. This is also safer for beads and spangles, as Stoddard solvent. However, it is not very effective in degreasing.
4. Silicone - silicone solvent is not as aggressive as PERC. But it is safer for beads and spangles, and hydrocarbons. It is also more environmentally friendly solvent.
